Welcome!

My sketchbook studies come from a wide variety of times and places both local and abroad. I like to keep them small (roughly 3"x 5") and quick (30 minutes give or take), I paint with watercolors and gouache (materials list for you in the sidebar). Enjoy!

Subaru Commercial Submission

This is a submission of examples of my paintings for a TV commercial about a Subaru owner using his car to get to remote locations to paint. See the full story and commercial here. I love how the commercial turned out but my work was not used in the end and I'm very happy about that. You'll understand why when you see it.

The paintings in the commercial definitely were not yours! They went with the comically amateur look I guess.

I really prefer your paintings over the ones in the commercial!

Beautiful work. Simply beautiful. There's something about their choice I find deeply troubling.

I have just watched the commercial and I have to say that I understand why they changed thier mind - frankly told your work would steal the show but I again I am glad to see your work.

I agree that your work would of stolen the ad. And understand the humor with the amateur work. I think they should do a alternate ad with your work, the concept could be about how much his work improved through his Subaru adventures.

I laughed out loud at the commercial which I think was very effective. I think the unexpected humor made it work. Your work is WAY to polished for someone who was just getting their first outdoor painting rig. I do understand the disappointment on your part though. I hope they were fair and that you got paid anyway.

Nathan...I'm glad you got to paint all these paintings..and I know a veteran like you is able to really roll with the punches in a situation like this. I love the commercial and I think it has a perfect ending. It's cool that you got to paint all these amazing paintings. I want to see them close up!

The other commenters are right, your paintings are much to good. They are beautiful!
The commercial needed really amaturish looking stuff to make it funny.
But now they know what you can do, it can lead to things!

Gorgeous! That was a good call - these couldn't be appreciated in a commercial like that.

Wow, subaru hit a new low.

The ad wouldn't have worked with your art. It would have insulted everyone to see all those polished paintings hanging up, and the wife not knowing which way was up. It wasn't about art, it was more about adventure. They could have done one about art, but it wouldn't hit the wider demographic they were looking for...but it was nice that they thought they needed (your art) for it.
