I don't usually work on black paper but sometimes it's a nice way to frame a very luminous or atmospheric subject.

Though I usually use a craft paper sketch book to paint in, I also enjoy carrying around a small moleskine, it's just so handy! So, some years ago I decided to put together a pocket size watercolor kit for the moleskine. This is what I came up with.

The case is a samsonite camera case and the drawings are in black prismacolor pencils.

I spent my summer vacation touring the national parks of Arizona and Utah. We'll start with the Grand Canyon. These were painted in a heavyweight black paper scrapbook. The dark paper seemed to suit the subject as there was so much light bouncing around in the shadows. I "borrowed" the black paper idea from one of my former students Chris Sears.

This will be the final Death Valley post for awhile; we'll move on to a new subject next week. If the sketches here feel a little different than the previous posts, it's because they were done many years earlier. These were done in acrylic on a Prince of Egypt art department trip in 1997. We didn't get to go to Egypt but did spend a week in Death Valley studying the desert landscape. The top one predates a sandstorm by about 10 minutes, the textures you see on it were created when it blew over into the sand. Great trip.

My time at Pdi Dreamworks in Redwood city is rapidly coming to a close, so I'd like to spend the next couple weeks posting lunchtime and evening sketches from around the studio grounds. We're adjacent to a bay marina which is where this one was done. It was the first I did here and I have to say, having come from the everpresent LA sun, I enjoyed the overcast.

My Sister used to live in San Louis Obisbo on the central coast of California. She could drive to LA to visit me in about 3 1/2 hours but for some reason it always took me over 4 hrs to drive up and visit her. The reason of course is sketches like this. You can't make that drive without pulling over to paint those scenic seaside vistas.

Welcome! I'm dusting off the ol' sketchbooks and getting the sketches online. I have to say that travelling with my painting sketchbook has been the most pleasurable part of being an artist and so I'm pleased to share my efforts with you.
Here are a few pics of the setup. I've got a water bin, an old listerine bottle to carry water in, masking tape, Winsor and Newton watercolors, white gouache, brushes (mostly Princeton and Robert Simmons white sable Flats), sketchbooks and a small hiking pack they all fit in. The sketchbooks are heavy weight, acid free craft paper made by Michael Roger Press and as it would happen, stopped being produced recently. Luckily I have several more stashed away. Canson makes a similar book that is currently available.
The studies are done small and quickly. Most are less than 3x5" and completed in 20 to 40 minutes.

My watercolor palette. All Winsor & Newton brand unless otherwise noted:
Permanent white designers gouache
winsor lemon
winsor yellow deep
yellow ochre
winsor orange
bright red
winsor red
permanent alizarin crimson
french ultramarine blue
pthalo blue (winsor blue greenshade)
pthalo green (winsor green blueshade)
permanent sap green
Pthalo yellow green (academy brand)
venetian red (light red or indian red)
raw umber
van dyke brown
ivory black

Enjoy!
